Cultural Brokers - Family Advocate Program

What is a Cultural Broker?

Cultural Brokers are community members who advocate and navigate for families. They are the same culture as the family and/or have an extensive knowledge base of the family culture. They work with families involved with the child welfare system or at-risk of becoming involved during an Emergency or Crisis referral from the Department of Social Services. Cultural Broker Family Advocate Program staff work in partnership with the Department of Social Services staff, school personnel, and conduct home-visitation, facilitate and or attend Team Decision Making meetings, case staffings, Permanency Teaming meetings etc. The Cultural Brokers work to improve services delivery and outcomes for families.

Cultural Brokers receive at a minimum 42 hours of in-services training which includes child and family observations, Fresno County DSS and the court system, Introducing the Law, Communications, Boundaries, and Best Practices in Child Welfare services. We have Certified Nurturing Parenting Facilitators, Certified Mental Health First Aide first responders and knowledge of specialized topic areas such as: Substance Abuse, domestic violence, ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act), LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender), and immigration/undocumented.
